Here we are in 2017 and half of Americans are living at the poverty line or below the poverty line in America. In a recent study, a person needs to make $18 per hour to live in America, but with our current government situation the GOP (Grand Old Pricks) in charge, more and more people will sink into poverty and it will only get worse. It is baffling to witness the “greatest country” with so much wealth that hard working citizens struggle just to provide the basic necessities to live. What is even more alarming is for the past thirty years wages have remained stagnant, American’s have not received a pay raise in 30 years! But, CEO’s are constantly giving themselves pay raises while their employees struggle.

“Something is wrong, very wrong when a healthy 30 year old cannot afford to support themselves; Wal-Mart and many other corporations have enough to pay their employees $30k, but instead the corporations see bankruptcy ahead.” Barbara Ehrenreich

This is from Barbara Ehrenreich book, Nickel and Dime On Not Getting By In America. After reading the book and analyzing to what is happening today, how did America allow their citizens to become poor? How for thirty years, the GOP (Grand Old Pricks) and those who support them get away with the inaccurate argument that raising the minimum wage cost jobs, it will hurt the citizens, specifically African-Americans and Latinos who work these low wage jobs? When employees are paid they have the ability to provide for their families, get out of poverty and live the man-made American dream. Furthermore, a wage increase provides the ability for people to save where they can have a safety net.

As a millennial, it is appalling that my generation is still fighting old battles from previous generations. Moreover, it is more appalling that my generation maybe the generation that is over educated yet the poorest generation because of wage stagnation for 30 years. Furthermore, our government is the main factor for allowing and continue to allow for corporations to nickel and dime employees. Our government pollution by these corporations illustrates their loss on people issues and these issues nor the people matter. The upsetting aspect is people will continue to work and remain poor, not being able to provide themselves with the basic necessities of life.
