SOCIAL MEDIA: THE GIFT AND THE CURSE

In every generation, there is a great discovery or invention that will change the world. For millennials and the next generation, the invention that has changed the course of our lives is technology, specifically social media. However, many great inventions and discovery is a gift and a curse and we are witnessing this with social media. The gift of social media is the real-time news we are receiving and the connections to billions of people in the world. The curse is the people who use social media for the wrong reasons such as manipulation to spread false information.

There is no doubt social media is the greatest invention for humanity. Social media is a tool that has opened many outlets to where people can learn, research and be part of a community. Real-time information affords us the ability to communicate and connect with reporters and news organization who is delivering the news. Additionally, social media is responsible for creating this access to real-time information we are receiving which gives the ability of staying abreast on current events. This key benefit of real-time information is the accuracy we need to understand our world and solve the issues.

What makes social media a gift is the fact the entire world uses this tool and it opened people to a new way of experiencing the world. Posts from citizens in other countries discussing their cultural and social norms, social media created an environment for everyone to interact and we have the ability to learn just by connecting with different from people from around the world. Being a universal learning tool is another reason social media is a gift. The saying “you learn something new every day” is true, with the plethora of information on social media there is an endless amount of reading and watching of information that changes the views of people.

Although social media has many gifts, one of the curses of social media is the people. If you understand human nature, then you will understand how people have a need to fit in, a need to belong and the need to share their views even if they are illogical. To keep it short, the curse of social media has created a need of attention a reason why the Kardashians exists. People know all of the Kardashians names, yet they cannot name a local or state official in their government. This need for attention has created an obsession with constantly being on social media all hours of the day, being detached from reality.

Information is key and needed to educate the society in order to have a sustainable world. However, the main curse of social media is all the information that is in cyber world, and not many people know the truth from deceptions. With all the access to information that social media provides, such as the ability to create websites and dozens of social media accounts, anyone has the ability to promote false information which has become an issue. We use information for truth and to solve problems, but with the easy access social media provides it has created the  problems of promoting false information which we are constantly fighting.

Social media is the greatest invention for humanity, we have a tool where we have information at our fingertips. We have a tool where billions of people from all over the world can engage and learn from each other, but we also have a tool where people have become detached from reality and promote false information. With everything taking place in the world, utilizing social media for the good will help our nation, more importantly, solve the issues to help make the world better.
