Common and John Legend acceptance speeches at the Oscars yesterday evening was the best of the best; both musical entertainers spoke truth that SELMA is now and that the voting rights act in which Martin Luther King, John Louis, Jessie Jackson and other great civil rights leader fought for are being compromised. Last spring, the Supreme Court ruled to remove section 5 of the voting rights act, that prohibited states from passing laws from allowing minorities from voting; in the years since President Obama has been elected in office, many conservative states have implemented tougher laws making it difficult for minorities to vote, and these past 2014 elections is an illustration of those laws.

The picture for this blog illustrates that we still live in a divided country; although the biases towards black people are not visible during the civil rights era, they still do exist and are ingrained in our political system
