President Obama in Cuba
President Obama is visiting Cuba, the second sitting President to visit the country in 88 years, Calvin Coolidge was the fist President to visit Cuba during a tumultuous time. Restoring the broken relationship with Cuba is the greatest foreign policy achievement for President Obama and it is time that we repair this relationship. There are many Cubans here in the U.S. that believe restoring the relationship with Cuba is necessary in order to bring the country and the Cuban people into the international community, more importantly to illustrate that the issues between the U.S. and Cuba are in the past.
“You do not need to fear a threat from the United States,” Obama said. “You do not need to fear the different voices of the Cuban people.”
“You do not need to fear a threat from the United States,” Obama said. “You do not need to fear the different voices of the Cuban people.” This coming from President Obama demonstrates to Cuba and President Castro have nothing to be concerned about with the U.S., we are not going to attack or attempt to overthrow their sitting government (a reason why Cuba and the U.S. have been disconnected). Lifting the 55 year embargo in 2015 was the first to showing Cuba and the people the U.S. is open to restoring the relationship with the country, and that diplomacy works.
Restoring the relationship with Cuba will not only cement is in President Obama legacy, it demonstrates to the world and the international community that our relationship with the international community is necessary. In order for the international community to achieve the shared goals and be successful, it was pertinent that the U.S. restored the relationship with Cuba and the Cuban government.
