ON AGAIN-OFF AGAIN: THE U.S. & NORTH KOREA SUMMIT
The Summit is On Again.
Nothing is more nerve wrecking than an off again and on-again relationship because we hope for the best for the couple. However, the U.S. and North Korea are not in a relationship, although it was beginning to form with North Korea denuclearizing their nukes. Sidebar: when it comes to uncertainty in relationships, it typically means it’s not going to happen. From the beginning, the summit was questionable. With the world having two incapable men with a dearth of diplomacy skills, it was doubtful Trump and Kim Jung Un would meet. Now that the summit appears to be off, the question remains what does this mean for the U.S? It means the U.S. influence is waning in the world and it means Kim Jung Un is not interested in any summit. Sidebar: now the summit is back on, another question is will anything get accomplished?
This summit is more about North Korea attempt of coming into the international community and fully making peace with South Korea. In addition, this summit is about the U.S. place in the world with Trump being in the oval office. However, any agreements made during the summit will have a lasting impact on both countries and the world.

*Update: before publishing this blog, Donald Trump announced the summit was off, however this past week Donald Trump announced the summit is back on. *
“Trump said he hoped the meeting would be “ultimately successful” but said he did not expect concrete results, like North Korea’s denuclearization, stressing that the meeting is “the start of a process.” HuffPost
What to expect?
Trump is correct to state, “the summit is the start of a process”. For 5 decades, North Korea has and continues to remain isolated from the world, costing the nation to become poor and the people living below poverty. Furthermore, because of the isolation, the international community placed sanctions on the country. Having this summit is a step in forging a relationship and a step in Trump attempting to illustrate any diplomacy skills if he has any. Sidebar: now that the summit is back on, what is to be accomplished is difficult to state.
Moreover, due to the on and off again of this summit, it’s challenging to believe any meaningful agreement will take place between the two men. Sidebar: for an entire year Trump and Kim Jung Un have been at each other with disparaging comments and tweets. Their behavior and dearth of diplomacy illustrates there is little to expect from the summit taken place in the next 6 days.
The back and forth between Trump and Kim Jung Un questions what the world should expect from the summit. Both men are not the ideal persons to broker any agreements dealing with nuclear weapons or any international policies.

With the most recent tweet by Trump stating “he does not have to do much to prepare much for this summit” indicates to the world we should not expect any agreements to take place.
The clear purpose of this summit is to have North Korea denuclearizing their nukes and to prevent them from testing any weapons, however, that will take years to persuade Kim Jung Un to do such a thing. Furthermore, this summit is a clear example of the changes in our international politics and a shift if North Korea fully becomes part of the international community.
With these changes taken place, this summit is a test of America’s place and influence in the world.
“Sidebar: normally, when international meetings take place there is always insight to what discussions will take place, however the U.S. and North Korea summit has not stated what will be discussed.”
*Update: Trump tweets, he does not have to prepare very much for this summit.*
